Why a multilingual site still fails to win customers abroad

🌐

A German visitor lands on the Ukrainian page

Without proper hreflang, Google serves the wrong language version. A visitor from Berlin lands on the Ukrainian page and bounces.

Result: international traffic is lost on entry
📉

Foreign-language SEO is not working at all

If you translated the site with Google Translate and expected traffic, that is the problem. Search behavior in Germany or Poland is different. Without real localization, you stay invisible.

Result: zero visibility in target markets
⚠️

Duplicate content pulls the whole site down

Without canonicals and hreflang, Google reads 3 copies of the same page as duplicates. Rankings drop across every version.

Result: multilingual setup hurts instead of helping

Without proper hreflang, Google serves the wrong language version. A visitor from Berlin lands on the Ukrainian page and bounces.

→ international traffic is lost at the first touchpoint

Who benefits from a multilingual website

🌍

International market expansion

If you need a localized site for Germany, Poland, the UK, or the US, it has to come with proper SEO, hreflang, and content adapted to each market.

What the service includes

⚙️

Polylang / WPML setup

Installation and configuration of the right multilingual plugin for your project. The exact choice depends on budget, architecture, and scale.

🔗

URL structure

Subdirectories (/en/, /de/) or subdomains (en.site.com). I assess both and choose the best option for SEO and ongoing management.

🏷️

hreflang implementation for SEO

Correct hreflang tags for every language version. Google understands which version to show in which country, without duplication or keyword cannibalization.

📝

Content translation

AI translation with native review, or integration of your own translated content. The goal is not literal translation. It is proper localization.

📊

Multilingual SEO

Localized meta tags, multilingual sitemap.xml, and schema.org markup for every language. Full SEO means more than just translating the title tag.

🌐

RTL and special-character support

Correct rendering for Arabic, Hebrew, and languages with special character sets, including RTL CSS support and proper font encoding.

FAQ

Polylang or WPML: which one is better?

Polylang is free, lightweight, and a strong fit for most projects. WPML is paid, but offers deeper WooCommerce integration and more flexibility for large catalogs. I review the project and recommend the right one.

Who handles the translation?

There are three options: 1) AI translation with native review, which is the fastest and most cost-efficient. 2) You provide finished translations and I integrate them into the CMS. 3) I can bring in professional translators for each language at a separate cost.

Subdirectories or subdomains: what is better for SEO?

Google generally prefers subdirectories (site.com/de/) because they inherit domain authority more directly. Subdomains (de.site.com) can be treated more like separate sites. For 90% of projects, subdirectories are the better choice.

Does a multilingual setup slow the website down?

If implemented properly, the impact is minimal. Polylang has almost no speed penalty. WPML can add 50-100ms, which I usually offset through caching and lazy loading. Core Web Vitals stay part of the rollout checklist.

What is hreflang and why does it matter?

hreflang is an HTML signal that tells Google which language version of a page should be shown to users in different countries. Without it, Google may show the Ukrainian version to German users or fail to index the language variants correctly.

How long does multilingual implementation take?

Basic setup (2 languages, up to 10 pages) takes 3-5 business days. A full project with 4 languages and 30+ pages usually takes 2-3 weeks. Enterprise WooCommerce rollouts start at 3 weeks. Final timing is confirmed after audit.
