A practical guide for e-commerce teams that want products to show up in ChatGPT Shopping through better schema, structured feeds, reviews, and product-page clarity.
Imagine this: a potential customer opens ChatGPT and asks, “Recommend a good robot vacuum under UAH 15,000.” AI analyzes dozens of sources, compares models, and returns a personalized recommendation with a photo, price, and a “Buy” button.
Your product is not in that list.
This is not a hypothetical scenario. ChatGPT Shopping is already live. Since November 2025, ChatGPT has been recommending products, and OpenAI has also tested faster checkout flows such as Instant Checkout with selected partners. For most merchants today, the user still completes the purchase on the seller’s site.
In this article I will explain what ChatGPT Shopping is, how it works, and most importantly, what you need to do so your products get into AI recommendations.
What ChatGPT Shopping is and why it matters
ChatGPT Shopping is a product search and recommendation feature inside ChatGPT. Instead of opening Google, comparing dozens of sites, and reading reviews, the user describes what they need and AI does the work.
How it works:
- The user asks a question: “Recommend a laptop for a designer under $1500”
- ChatGPT asks follow-up questions: screen size, weight, brand?
- AI researches the web, analyzes reviews, and compares prices
- It returns a personalized list with photos, prices, and pros and cons
- The user clicks through to the seller’s site to buy, and in some partner experiments OpenAI has also tested faster checkout flows
Key facts:
- ChatGPT can now compare products more visually, with richer discovery flows, side-by-side comparisons, and up-to-date product information.
- For Shopify merchants, product data is already integrated into ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog to improve product discovery.
- Instant Checkout is available for eligible Etsy items and select Shopify merchants, while many products still send users to the merchant site to complete checkout.
- Available on all ChatGPT plans: Free, Go, Plus, Pro
ChatGPT Shopping is not the future. It is the present. And businesses that do not optimize for AI recommendations now are losing sales every day.
How ChatGPT chooses which products to recommend
ChatGPT does not show ads and does not accept payment for placement. Recommendations are based on 5 factors:
Query relevance ▼
Does your product actually match what the user is looking for? The name, description, and features should clearly explain what it is and who it is for.
Structured data (schema markup) ▼
Schema.org/Product markup is the minimum threshold. Without it, AI will either ignore the page or use it only partially. You need the name, price, availability, brand, rating, and variants.
Reviews and authority ▼
ChatGPT analyzes reviews, not just star counts, but the actual content. Reviews that describe specific use cases, pros and cons, and purchase context are the most valuable for AI.
Freshness and availability ▼
ChatGPT does not recommend products with outdated prices or out-of-stock status. The feed has to be updated regularly. Stable URLs, consistent product IDs.
Context and intent match ▼
AI looks at context: budget, who the purchase is for, and which features matter. Product pages that answer real buyer questions, not just dry specs, get priority.
7 steps: how to get into ChatGPT Shopping
Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt ▼
If robots.txt blocks OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT cannot see your catalog. Check it right now.
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
User-agent: ChatGPT-User
Allow: /
Important: OAI-SearchBot is the bot for Shopping. ChatGPT-User is for general search. Allow both.
Add schema.org/Product markup ▼
This is the most important technical step. Without Product schema, AI cannot extract product data properly.
Minimum fields:
name– product namedescription– 2-3 sentences, not SEO spamimage– URL of a high-quality photooffers.price+offers.priceCurrency– priceoffers.availability– availabilitybrand.name– brandaggregateRating– average rating and number of reviewsreview– 2-3 best reviews
The ready JSON-LD template you can copy is below in the article.
Optimize descriptions for buyer questions ▼
ChatGPT looks for content that answers real questions. Instead of dry specs, write like you would explain it to a friend.
Bad: “Robot vacuum XYZ-3000. 2500 Pa. 5000 mAh battery. Wi-Fi. App.”
Good: “Robot vacuum XYZ-3000 is designed for apartments up to 100 m². It runs for 2.5 hours on one charge and returns to the dock automatically. It handles pet hair well. You control it from your phone app.”
The second version can be quoted by AI as a recommendation.
Collect high-quality reviews ▼
AI analyzes the content of reviews, not just the number of stars. “5 stars, all good” is useless. “Bought it for my mom’s birthday, she is 65, figured it out in 10 minutes, it runs quietly” is perfect for AI.
How to get those reviews:
- Ask specifically: “Who did you buy it for? What did you like most?”
- Respond to negative reviews, AI sees that too
- Use schema Review markup for reviews
Keep your product feed clean and accessible ▼
ChatGPT relies on structured catalog data and product feeds so products are represented accurately in discovery results.
For Shopify: product data is already integrated through Shopify Catalog.
For other platforms: prepare an XML or JSON feed with current data: prices, availability, descriptions, photos, and ratings. Keep URLs stable and product IDs consistent across updates.
Review partner checkout options if you use Shopify or Etsy ▼
OpenAI currently supports Instant Checkout for eligible Etsy items and select Shopify merchants. For many merchants today, the practical path is still a fast seller-site checkout after the ChatGPT clickthrough.
If you are on Shopify or another major platform, monitor rollout updates. For now, the safest move is to optimize your site for fast checkout after AI-driven product discovery.
Track AI traffic in GA4 ▼
Create a separate GA4 segment for ChatGPT traffic:
- Source =
chatgpt.comorchat.openai.com - Medium =
referral

Google Shopping
ChatGPT Shopping
Main difference: in Google Shopping you pay for visibility. In ChatGPT Shopping you can appear for free if your product is good and described properly. That is e-commerce democratization.
5 mistakes that make AI ignore your store
1. robots.txt blocks OAI-SearchBot
If the bot is blocked, ChatGPT cannot see your catalog at all. Check robots.txt right now.
2. No schema.org/Product markup
Without structured data, AI sees text but does not understand that it is a product with a price and availability. It is like speaking to a foreigner without a translator.
3. Outdated prices and stock status
ChatGPT does not recommend products with incorrect data. If your site says the price is $5,000 but it is really $7,000, AI can notice through other sources and lower trust.
4. Descriptions that list specs instead of answering questions
“2500 Pa, 5000 mAh battery” will not help AI recommend it as an answer to “which vacuum is good for a home with a cat.” Write descriptions as answers to buyer questions.
5. No reviews or fake reviews
AI recognizes fake reviews, ones that are repetitive, vague, and too positive. Ten real detailed reviews are better than 100 fake “all good” reviews.

Agentic Commerce: the next step after Shopping
Update (April 2026): OpenAI has gone beyond ChatGPT Shopping. AI agents now do not just recommend products, they independently search, compare, and choose the best option on behalf of the user. This is called the Agentic Commerce Protocol.
What this means for business:
- AI agent = a new type of buyer. It does not scroll a catalog, it makes API requests and analyzes structured data.
- Shopify and Walmart are already connected to the protocol. If your platform supports it, you are automatically in the game.
- Product schema is now critical. Without it, the AI agent cannot read your product.
- Real-time price and availability matter because the agent checks before recommending. Stale data equals rejection.
The purchase still happens on the seller’s site – AI finds it, the seller closes it.

Frequently asked questions about ChatGPT Shopping
No. ChatGPT Shopping does not sell ad placements. Recommendations are based on product quality, structured data, reviews, and query relevance. It is a free channel, you just need to optimize the site properly.
Shopping Research is available to logged-in ChatGPT users, and product recommendations can work globally if your site is accessible to OAI-SearchBot. Some faster checkout experiments have been limited to selected partners, but the main flow today is AI discovery followed by checkout on the seller’s site.
For WooCommerce: 1) allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt, 2) install a plugin for schema Product markup, such as Rank Math SEO or Yoast SEO Premium, 3) optimize product descriptions, 4) collect reviews. You can create a product feed through the Google Listings & Ads plugin.
It will not replace it, but it will complement it. Google Shopping will remain a core channel for e-commerce. ChatGPT Shopping is a new channel with a different model, recommendations instead of ads. The smart strategy is to be present in both.
In GA4, create a segment: Source = chatgpt.com, Medium = referral. For partner checkout experiments, use the native merchant dashboard where available. For clickthroughs from ChatGPT to your site, standard GA4 tracking works.
What to do right now
ChatGPT Shopping is a new sales channel where you do not pay for impressions. You are recommended if your product is good and described properly.
- Check robots.txt and allow OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User
- Add schema.org/Product to all product pages
- Rewrite descriptions: answer buyer questions, do not copy specs
- Collect real reviews with details
- Set up GA4 to track AI traffic
Businesses that do this now will get first-mover advantage while competitors are still figuring out that ChatGPT already sells.
